The night

Lunar New Year's Eve. The snow has been falling since the afternoon, and the roads of this little town have all but disappeared. There's no phone signal, and the line to the store's landline has snapped under the snow.

Longlight Convenience Store, open twenty-four hours. Tonight's night shift is yours. New Year's Eve pays triple; that's what you told Mom, anyway. At ten o'clock Zhou, the owner, hands over the shift, and the first thing he says is: keep the lights on tonight.

Zhou
ZhouThe owner. He leaves after handing over the shift, with nothing but "Keep the lights on tonight."

Who comes in tonight

One by one, people drift in out of the snow. A girl with a drawing tube, waiting for the first bus. A middle-aged man reeking of liquor, bragging to anyone who'll listen. None of them should be here. All of them are.

How it plays

Mom calls at midnight. The signal keeps cutting out. Tonight, every word has to come from you.

Say whatever you want.
You don't pick dialogue options. You type, and each customer answers in their own way.
Say the right thing, hear the truth.
Make people feel respected and understood, and they'll open up a little at a time.
Only you remember.
Every night they forget you. Your clues stay in your clue book; show the right one to the right person and they may tell you the truth on the spot.
Change the night with what you know.
Try the blunt approach or the gentle one. Stopping one thing doesn't mean you'll see the morning.

A young woman in a delivery uniform stamps into the store, her helmet caked with snow. Her e-bike's battery died in the snow, she says, and she can't even push it anymore, so she's come in to warm up first.

You: Still doing deliveries in this snow?

The courier with the snow-caked helmet·relaxed: Yeah, last few. My e-bike's battery gave out on me though, so I'm kind of stuck here till it thaws. No big deal.

You:It is New Year's Eve. People still order takeout tonight?

At 5:47 a.m., brakes shriek on the bend outside.

You snap back. The clock on the wall says ten. Zhou is standing at the counter, saying exactly the same thing.

Only you remember.
